I have actually learned a lot by folks in the UK on squirrel hunting over the years. My favorite is Squirrel Hunter TV - https://www.youtube.com/user/squirrelhuntertv
After looking at all the wooden designs in the UK that looked very good and perhaps even contrived... I have wondered why some different choices did not ever show up.
I have put a US mailbox onto some planks of wood and it holds 10lbs of peanuts. I drilled several holes in the bottom to drain any moisture. Attached to the planks it prevents multiple racoons from removing it from its perch.
I put some duct seal from branch RectorSeal to prevent me shooting through the container. It has prevented 2 .177 shots at 910 fps, so far.
The feeding trough was a section of steel which was welded to the very thin, sheet metal, steel, mailbox.
It's been working well. I get lots of birds and squirrels. It reduces the amount of bird take. Which was a major goal. But it allows the birds to hit it enough that the squirrels pay attention to the trend in the neigborhood.
I get at least 2-3 weeks between fills so far. With the same volume but open wood feeders I got several days.
Has anyone else tried the mailbox? what do you think?

Recently I found a funny squirrel feeder, I really like Accoutrements horse head squirrel feeder, it has become nothing but a pure source of fun and entertainment for my family. After hanging it on a branch of a tree, squirrels have been constantly eating there. My and the neighbor’s young children would watch the squirrel do their crazy antics just to have their share of the seeds inside.
Nice idea.
I use the recycled plastic fake wood deck boards.
