What do people use as bait for rats?

In our street the back gardens over looks a small stream/beck and there are rats all over, I normally use left over food to lure them but that doesn't always work, its hitty missy.

Mince and dumplings went down a treat but cant afford to feed them that everyday!

Peanut butter, they had very little interest, they usually like bread but have to wet it or they run off with the bits or even the full slice.

Whats everyone's preferred bait?
I can tell you I have shot many off my bird feeder. Bird seed seems to really draw them in. I have trapped many with peanut butter also.

Cheap Cat food......mush it up and smear it round, stuff with beef chunks or gravy - nothing they can pick up and run away with. Peanut butter has worked.....also if you feel generous - Nutella or chocolate spread.

According to my keeper mate you need to use the worstest cheapest nastiest cat food you can get and run it in a blender (or just mash it up) with some water to make it runny. If it's not wet enough they can run off with lumps but if it's a wet paste they have to sit and eat at the bait point.

I second the cat food. Dog food is also supposed to be good, if you blend it up so they cannot run off with chunks.

I use tins of sweet corn and liquidised the corn into a sloppy paste. One tin does an outing and seems to keep them still long enough to get a shot off.
